Adaptive Sports and Recreation in our Community

In our community: Adaptive sports and recreation

By: Amanda Stone, DPT

What are adaptive sports and recreation? Adaptive sports and recreation are sports accommodated to all abilities. This can range from wheelchair basketball to adaptive water skiing. Adaptive sports programs strive to provide both inclusive and accessible health and wellness opportunities for individuals of all abilities both physical and mental. Through participation in adaptive recreation individuals can be empowered to stay active, gain confidence, and achieve personal goals. Some programs provide both competitive and recreational sports, while others offer exercise classes, community involvement, and support groups. Overall, adaptive sports can be a great way to improve quality of life and increase social interaction and participation.
